What is Meditation? Meditation is a practice of mental training that provides a degree of mental silence and focus. The goal is to get the practitioner to focus on something, whether it be their breathing, a mantra, or an idea from which they detach themselves. The practitioner then becomes fully aware and focused on the present moment. Meditation was created 5,000 years ago as a form of self-training or self-relaxation from India and Tibet. As it spread over time more people began to practice it for various reasons such as stress relief, spirituality, or physical fitness.

We all want to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It is a common problem in our society, that is why various techniques are being developed to help people. Meditation is one of them. What do you know about it? Meditation is a practice that can be done in different ways and has been used for centuries to ease mental and physical pain. There are many types of meditation, but the most common ones are: sitting meditation (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), or even eating meditation (goshin). Meditation helps your mind get more focused which leads to less stress and anxiety. It can also help you feel more peaceful as well as less frustrated with yourself or other people. There are many different types of meditation. The most common types are concentrative, mindfulness, and mantra-based meditation.

Meditation is a way to understand the mind and its potential. It has been used for thousands of years in Eastern philosophies as a means to achieve enlightenment or nirvana. Some people use it for spiritual reasons, others use it for health reasons like reducing stress, depression, and anxiety. More still use meditation to relax and manage physical pain. What does it do? When you meditate your brain produces certain chemicals that help it relax. The main chemical that is released is serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that makes us feel happy and relaxed. It also helps us sleep better at night and even reduces pain, so when there is more serotonin in the brain the person will be less upset or in less pain.

Biochemically derived from tryptophan, serotonin is primarily found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, platelets, and in the central nervous system (CNS) of animals including humans.” It also helps fight depression and makes us feel less anxious. The other chemical that is released is dopamine. Dopamine controls your motivation and is very useful when trying to achieve a goal. Dopamine also produces positive feelings by transmitting the happy hormone brain chemical called “dopamine”. Dopamine acts as a reward in the brain that is released when you accomplish a goal. It is also used to help us concentrate and focus.

When meditating there are many benefits; it will help you become more relaxed, relieve stress and anxiety, and manage physical pain. It can also help you be more focused in your day-to-day activities and help you achieve your goals. People use it for so many different reasons: spiritual benefits, stress relief, mental fitness, physical fitness, concentration, and focus to name a few. If you practice the right way then you will achieve great benefits such as peace of mind, feeling less stressed or anxious, decreased physical pain, or mental pain like depression or low self-esteem. It may take time to learn to meditate and get those benefits but that is okay because it will help you in your everyday life. If you practice it the right way then your brain will produce chemicals that will help you relax. You will have a clearer mind, and be able to focus better on the task at hand. It also helps you achieve a goal. You may want to try it out and see what happens!

Meditation is easier said than done. It does not mean sitting still and not doing anything but it does require some practice just like anything else does. When beginning your meditation practice it may not come easy; you have to work at it. If you find yourself getting distracted or if your mind wanders it is okay, that just happens. It will take time to learn the correct techniques and learn how to calm your body and mind and concentrate on something. This is a process so do not get frustrated if you get bad at it at first, just try again. Some people may be more relaxed at first while others might struggle with focusing on the proper thing or thinking about other things, but relax do not worry they all have to start somewhere as well.

If you are having trouble with your breathing then try to take deep breaths and really concentrate on the air going in and out of your body. Also if you are having a hard time concentrating on something or calming yourself down then focus on the sound of a ticking clock or watch that helps to help calm you. You might also want to go into a room that is completely quiet so that you can concentrate better, but it can help you if there are things going on around you as well like birds chirping. Meditation works best when there is not too much noise in the background because it can be distracting, but some sounds are okay no matter what.

“At the end of the day, we want to be happy with our lives. We want to be able to look in the mirror and feel good about how we look, how we act, how we move, and how we express ourselves. So to feel good about ourselves is really important.” When you are ready to start meditating just sit down somewhere quiet for a few minutes where you will not get disturbed by other people. With that said it is okay if other people may look at what you are doing or try taking a picture of you, as long as they do not disturb you. “The most common thing that will get in the way of peace is other people. We all know that, and when we find some peace and harmony within ourselves it makes us feel good.”

When you are meditating try to think about something different than your problems or stress, for example, think about a place in your life where you felt happy and calm. Also, when you are feeling anxious or upset think about something that makes you calm like a happy memory or someone’s smile to help bring back the feeling of happiness. Breathe deeply and slowly and focus on your breathing until it comes naturally and do not think about anything other than the air coming out and going in your body. “Meditation is a very simple process. It is just learning how to relax and concentrate, and it is really the key to a lot of things that we are trying to do in life.”

The benefits of meditation can be good for every single person out there because it helps you learn how to focus your mind on something else besides your anxious thoughts. It will help you get clear about what you want and need in life and it will help you calm down after a stressful day at work or school, or even when taking an exam.

“The best meditation tip I ever got was that when you are practicing meditation, you should not be counting sheep.” Instead of counting or thinking about sheep, this tip helps you just concentrate on your breathing and your thoughts. Meditation may take some time to learn, but if you practice it every day it will become more comfortable and easy to do overtime so that you can calm yourself down and relax as much as possible. When we meditate we focus on something in particular that we feel can help us relax, something that will help us think clearly, and something to keep us consistent with our goal. The brain is a very powerful tool.

As the word is repeated it can have a calming effect; this serves to clear your mind of all other thoughts or distractions.

When one chooses a mantra it is important that they feel comfortable repeating it over and over without difficulty. A common way to find a mantra is to say the word or phrase out loud and feel what the sound feels like in your mouth. Once you feel comfortable with that say it out loud again but, this time, find a new, relaxing place for your tongue and lips to rest on each syllable. Once you are comfortable saying the word or phrase choose one that resonates with you and your spiritual beliefs.

In conclusion, there are many different forms of meditation and it is very important for an individual to find the form that suits them best. These forms can be used to promote better physical, emotional, and mental health while promoting inner peace, self-awareness, and happiness.

Practicing meditation is beneficial for most people, however, it’s important to talk about what you expect from yourself before you start. This way you will better understand what kind of results you will have from practicing:
1.  More focus/concentration: If your main goal is to improve concentration or focus then any type of meditative practice can help with this.
2.  More focus on everyday life: If your main goal is to improve focus on everyday life and tasks then any type of meditative practice will help you achieve this.  
3.  More spiritual awareness: If your main goal is to improve spiritual awareness or connection with yourself and others then the mantra meditation can help you achieve this.
4.  Less stressed out, better sleep, fewer fights/arguments: If your goal is to reduce stress then any type of meditation will be beneficial in these areas. You can benefit from all the other benefits of meditation as well. It all depends on your personal goals and how much time and effort you put into practice each day.
